You can no longer qualify for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials at the St. George Marathon, but thousands of runners flock to Utah to nab a precious Boston qualifier.
The top times Saturday from the Lone Star state looks like a who's who of great regional talent -- the Tornados' Wilmer Bustillos, 45, of Katy, leading the way in 2:41:05.
Austin's 50-state marathoner Frank Livaudais, 35, churned out another sub 3-hour time in 2:56:52 while 59-year-old Steve Brammer from Katy put down a three-hour even chip time (gun time was 3:00:01).
And right in the mix? One of our own. The Woodlands' Bob Maus, 46, has tried seven times since 2003 to break the magic 3-hour time barrier. All of his times have been pretty consistent. 3:09:28, 3:11:02, 3:13:32, 3:15:12, 3:20:13, 3:06:33 and 3:16:25.
Saturday, he did.
Within the top 125 overall, Maus turned in a 2:59:36 to post a near 17-minute improvement from last November's Rock 'N' Roll Marathon in San Antonio.
A pair of Spring residents also made the trip to Utah -- 45-year-old John Lassig recorded a time of 3:51:22 while 37-year-old John McCloskey posted a 4:21:33.
Meanwhile, The Woodlands Running Club's Geri Henry is in a race of her own -- to get a marathon done in 50 states before former club president Tony Allison.
The 62-year-old pulled herself into a tie with Allison on the strength of a 5:26:47 finish that gives the two of them a marathon in 36 states.
It was Henry's 44th career marathon.
Conroe's Susan Rouse, according to "Deer Tracks" editor Bill Dwyer, is four states behind the two.
Gary Van Kuiken and Lou Wilson are the two current The Woodlands Running Club members with a marathon finish in all 50 states.
