HOUSTON, TX (September 23, 2010) – In support of the Gateway to the Bay Triathlon hosted in the city of Kemah, the City Council on a vote of four to one will provide $32,000 as a prize purse for the 2011 event. The event will take place April 1-3, 2011 in the heart of the city along and around the Kemah Boardwalk. Onurmark Productions organizes the event from start to finish and Kemah is excited to host the second annual event. Registration for the 2011 event will begin October 18, 2010 on the www.gatewaytothebay.com website.
This will be one of the top ten Olympic distance triathlon prize purses in the nation and attract athletes from across the nation. The inaugural event took place in 2010 and had over 1,500 athletes and this year the projected field is set for 2,000. Last year’s event attracted former Olympians Matt Reed and Andy Potts to help raise funds for the primary beneficiary, “Jenny’s Light”.
The event raised $9,000 in 2010 for “Jenny’s Light” and has set a goal of $25,000 for 2011. In support of the council’s decision, event organizers will host a 5K run for the City of Kemah Police Alumni Fund. All proceeds from the 5K run will go directly to the fund and take place Sunday morning in conjunction with the Olympic distance race.
On the success of the 2010 event, certified USA Triathlon Race Director Aaron Palaian wanted to offer a prize purse in 2011. The Gateway to the Bay Triathlon, already unique in production, starts its Olympic distance swim from the middle of the bay after ferrying athletes by boat to the starting buoys. The event offers a multisport and fitness expo on Friday, a sprint distance race on Saturday and an Olympic distance race on Sunday. This year, the organizers of the event are planning to host a fundraising dinner on Friday evening, clinics on Saturday with some additional activities Saturday evening.
Saturday’s sprint distance race will start with a 500 meter swim, 12.5 mile bike and 5 kilometer run. Sunday’s Olympic distance race will start with a 1500 meter swim, 40 kilometer bike and finish with a 10 kilometer run.
