Lyons, Ponette-Maldonado Lead Area at Frost Yer Fanny Duathlon

Duathletes from the Woodlands MultiSport coverage area notched 14 podium finishes during Sunday’s Frost Yer Fanny at Houston’s Bear Creek Park.
Finish Strong Racing founder Dana Lyons and Outrival Racing coach Karen Ponette-Maldonado led the way with the area’s top times.
The 53-year-old Lyons was one of four area athletes to win their age group with a 66-second win over Arlington’s Tom Rodgers, while Ponette-Maldonado, 42, was less than five seconds away from winning hers from Shama Cycles’ Melanie Sun.

Lyons finished the 3-mile run, 15-mile bike and 2-mile run course in 1:08:58 while Ponette-Maldonado led all area women in 1:18:54.
Sisters Hannah and Katherine Barron and The Woodlands’ Nora Wilson also won their age groups.
A former member of The Woodlands High School Triathlon Team, Hannah Berryhill joined Cindy McManis, John Robertson and James Griffis as second-place age group finishers while Sandra Sutherland, Lane Barron, Conner Barry, Ronnie Delzer (all of The Woodlands) and Spring’s Steve Hardy all took home third-place hardware.
The younger Barron, 14, won her age group easily in 1:27:27, but Katherine, 16, was pushed by 19-year-old University of Texas Triathlon team freshman Michaela Wright and 17-year-old Silvia Roldan.
Katherine posted an age-group winning time of 1:26:47, but literally beat both Wright and Roldan in transition.  Barron’s margin of victory over the duo was six and 52 seconds, respectively, but she rolled up a minute and 43-second edge in transition over Wright and a 62-second advantage over Roldan.
With an age-group winning time of 1:29:06, Wilson, 55, easily won her division by more than six minutes.
McManis, 51, and University of Texas Triathlon team sophomore Berryhill, 20, finished in 1:31:59 and 1:36:14, respectively.

Robertson, 37, was a minute and 37 seconds off of age-group leading Trent Stephens, 39, of Houston, in 1:10:52.  Both will compete in May's inaugural Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas.
Starling Award winner (for the most duathlons in the USAT-SMW Region in 2010) James Griffis, 58, was second in 1:19:54 to fellow Starling Award winner (for triathlons) Jack Alexander in 1:19:54 and held off rookie duathlete Joe Carey of the Bay Area Running Club.

James Griffis, Michael Waldau and Jack Alexander
Griffis beat Carey by just 31 seconds with the edge coming both in transition and on the bike.
Coached by fellow third-place age group winner Sandra Sutherland, 17-year-old Conner Barry exited T2 with a .8-second lead over Clayton Wilkins but slipped behind on the 2-mile run by 17 seconds for a still impressive finish of 1:11:29 – 23rd overall.
Former East Carolina cross country star Ronnie Delzer, 30, of The Woodlands was 11th overall with a time of 1:09:19 and was just 30 seconds out of second in the 30-34 age group while passing The Woodlands’ Gavish Mago before entering T2.  Mago was fourth in 1:10:42.
Hardy, 45, and Barron, 12, were third in their divisions in 1:20:45 and 1:22:34, respectively.
     Area-coached athletes also fared well.
Finish Strong’s Sharon Morin, 49, of Houston, and Scott Pinkston, 43, of Sugar Land were second and third, respectively in the women’s 45-49 and Clydesdale divisions while Outrival Racing’s Adam Currier, 35, of Houston, was third in the men’s 35-39 age group.
