Lyons, Ponette-Maldonado Lead Area at Frost Yer Fanny Duathlon
Duathletes from the Woodlands MultiSport coverage area notched 14 podium finishes during Sunday’s Frost Yer Fanny at Houston’s Bear Creek Park.
Finish Strong Racing founder Dana Lyons and Outrival Racing coach Karen Ponette-Maldonado led the way with the area’s top times.
The 53-year-old Lyons was one of four area athletes to win their age group with a 66-second win over Arlington’s Tom Rodgers, while Ponette-Maldonado, 42, was less than five seconds away from winning hers from Shama Cycles’ Melanie Sun.

Lyons finished the 3-mile run, 15-mile bike and 2-mile run course in 1:08:58 while Ponette-Maldonado led all area women in 1:18:54.
Sisters Hannah and Katherine Barron and The Woodlands’ Nora Wilson also won their age groups.
A former member of The Woodlands High School Triathlon Team, Hannah Berryhill joined Cindy McManis, John Robertson and James Griffis as second-place age group finishers while Sandra Sutherland, Lane Barron, Conner Barry, Ronnie Delzer (all of The Woodlands) and Spring’s Steve Hardy all took home third-place hardware.
The younger Barron, 14, won her age group easily in 1:27:27, but Katherine, 16, was pushed by 19-year-old University of Texas Triathlon team freshman Michaela Wright and 17-year-old Silvia Roldan.
Katherine posted an age-group winning time of 1:26:47, but literally beat both Wright and Roldan in transition. Barron’s margin of victory over the duo was six and 52 seconds, respectively, but she rolled up a minute and 43-second edge in transition over Wright and a 62-second advantage over Roldan.
With an age-group winning time of 1:29:06, Wilson, 55, easily won her division by more than six minutes.
McManis, 51, and University of Texas Triathlon team sophomore Berryhill, 20, finished in 1:31:59 and 1:36:14, respectively.
Robertson, 37, was a minute and 37 seconds off of age-group leading Trent Stephens, 39, of Houston, in 1:10:52. Both will compete in May's inaugural Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas.

Griffis beat Carey by just 31 seconds with the edge coming both in transition and on the bike.
Coached by fellow third-place age group winner Sandra Sutherland, 17-year-old Conner Barry exited T2 with a .8-second lead over Clayton Wilkins but slipped behind on the 2-mile run by 17 seconds for a still impressive finish of 1:11:29 – 23rd overall.
Former East Carolina cross country star Ronnie Delzer, 30, of The Woodlands was 11th overall with a time of 1:09:19 and was just 30 seconds out of second in the 30-34 age group while passing The Woodlands’ Gavish Mago before entering T2. Mago was fourth in 1:10:42.

Over 100 Area Runners Complete USA Fit Marathon and Half Marathon
Twenty-nine men and 72 women from the Woodlands MultiSport coverage area sloshed their way through blustery, wet and chilly conditions to complete Sunday’s USA Fit Marathon and Half Marathon in Sugar Land.
Not only did runners head back north with six podium finishes in the half marathon and a second-place, 20-29 age group finish in the marathon from Magnolia’s Nicholas Gault, but The Woodlands’ Linda Trinkle, 43, won the women’s half marathon in a time of 1:41:28.
Trinkle beat Conroe’s Amy Wells and Houston’s Annabella Betancourt to the finish line for a 13-second win.
Wells, 38, who lodged a gun time finish of 1:41:41, actually beat Betancourt to the finish line by 10 seconds, but the Houstonian’s chip time gave her the first place age group award.
Trinkle easily, though, won her 40-49 age group with a four-minute advantage over Sugar Land’s Sally Whitworth.
The Woodlands’ Kaitlyn Bailey, 19 and New Caney’s Annamarie Clark, 60, were also age group winners.
Second overall by chip time (but eighth by gun time), Bailey easily outdistanced her closest age group competitors by more than five minutes to stop the clock in 1:40:25.
With a time of 2:41:21, Clark led 33 women to the finish who were 60 years of age or older, including 82-year-old Addie Kephart of Atascosita. Kephart completed her second half marathon in three weekends.
Montgomery father-and-son Gregg and Michael Garrard were both second in their respective half marathon divisions.
Gregg, 47, was sixth overall in 1:27:00 and 46 seconds behind Finish Line Sports’ Brett Cole to take second, while Michael was a distant second – in 1:39:51 – to his closest competitor, the defending champion from East Bernard, Patrick Pitts.
Pitts, a redshirt freshman at Sam Houston State, won in 1:18:47.
Spring’s Riley Young, 15, was third in the division in 1:50:06.
Magnolia’s Nicholas Gault was second in his 20-29 age group in the marathon with a time of 4:10:01.
Other highlights from the Woodlands MultiSport coverage area included:
+ Juliee Sparks, 34, and Sara Jones, 32, both members of The Woodlands Running Club, finished 8th and 9th, respectively, in their 30-39 age group.
It was Sparks’ second marathon in less than three months and she bettered her 4:02:51 Marine Corps Marathon time last October by more than nine minutes in 3:53:46. Jones chimed in with a 3:57:11.
They were the only two from the area to post sub-four hour marathons.
+ Lacy Goedeke, 28, of Spring, continued her preparation for the Rocky Raccoon 50 Miler next month by pacing her sister, Kelly Walker, 25, of Cypress, to her first half marathon finish in 2:33:59.

May Magic on Market Street #6: Ed Wandell, Magnolia
Once Magnolia's Ed Wandell made the leap, he went in all the way.
You'll read below that Ed got his start in triathlons in 2007 at CB&I, like so many others. But after that, there's been no turning back for the 53-year-old.
The first year was seven sprint triathlons and Ten For Texas (which he has now completed four times).
In 2008, he made the progression to the Olympic and half iron distance, which laid the groundwork for three halves in 2009 and his first Ironman - with a 12:44:44 finish - last September in Wisconsin.
And in May, he'll bring it all full circle at Ironman Texas as one of just seven Magnolia residents ever to finish an Ironman.
2010 USAT age? -- 53.
Birthplace? -- Elgin, Illinois.
You've been identified as registering for Ironman Texas. What motivated you to sign up? -- Hometown energy, lots of training partners and lots of smack talk!
Will this be your first attempt at an Ironman? -- No.
If not, how many IMs have you completed? -- One. IM Moo (Wisconsin) last September. (Editor's note: Ed finished IM Wisconsin in 12:44:44.)
Will you/did you get an MDot tattoo after your first Ironman? -- I am open to it – just not “moooooved” to do it yet!
What triathlon/running/cycling clubs do you belong to? -- Lonestar Multisport.
Do you train with anyone (i.e. training group)? -- Mostly by myself, sometimes club rides and masters swims.
Are you coached by anyone? -- Steve Breeding coached me through Ironman Wisconsin and Michelle LeBlanc will be coaching me for Ironman Texas.
How many hours a week do you spend training? -- 12-13 hours consistently.
When was your first triathlon? -- CB&I – 2007.
How did you do? -- 1:28. I was hooked. (Editor's note: The last three years, Ed has been 1:16, 1:11 and 1:12.)
Why did you get into the sport? -- To increase my endurance to be able to make backpacking with my Boy Scout troop easier.
What have you learned about yourself while pursuing triathlon/Ironman? -- I rock.
Which of the three disciplines is your strongest? -- If I can get my swimming under control, my only limiters will be cycling and running.
What's your favorite triathlon distance? -- The one I am racing.
Favorite race? -- CB&I – Lots of porta-cans.
What's your bucket list race? -- Alcatraz.
One piece of gear or gadget that you can't do without? -- Yankz – I’m easily pleased.
What's your favorite training routine? -- Early morning – it gets the day started right.
What are some of your favorite routes (biking or running)? -- Biking - 149 to Richards and Anderson back down 1774. Lots of Hills. Running - I like running out in the country on gravel roads and no traffic. I like the rhythmic sound of my feet on the gravel. Swimming – Following the black line.
What foods are most critical in your training? -- Peanut butter, lots of fruits and vegetables, beans, yogurt and sunflower seeds.
Who or what gets you out of bed to train on bad days/freezing rain/100 degree heat? -- I envision the starter cannon going off at an Ironman race and 2,700 of my friends and I start swimming at the beginning of a long 140.6-mile day. I will do anything to be prepared for that sobering moment - even 5 a.m. swims.
What has had the greatest impact on your progress as an athlete? -- Steve Breeding.
How has triathlon changed your life? -- More confidence and patience. Also, and I am just going to say it – life is just a little bit about me.
Favorite website(s)? -- BeginnerTriathlete.com
If you were the God of triathlons for one day, what change would you make? -- Let my kids run with me for a bit --- until their old man wears them out.
Favorite triathlete? -- Lew Hollander. He is 80 and still racing as an Ironman.
Favorite athlete to watch in another sport? -- My kids doing anything!
Favorite city to visit? -- It’s not a city: Truchas Peak in the Pecos Wilderness near Santa Fe, New Mexico – over 13000’. Civilization is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
Bucket list (1 to 5 things) -- 1.) Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with one of my kids, 2.) move to the mountains and 3.) sail the Caribbean.
Favorite quote or motto? -- "It don’t get any better than this."

The Courier's female duathlete of the year, Nora Wilson, 54, of The woodlands, led the way in 1:50:10 while The Woodlands Running Club vice president Randy Bradley, 48, chased Kristin Collins, 39, to the finish line, but couldn't catch her as Collins beat Bradley to the line by two seconds in 1:50:34.
Conroe's Leanne Rosser, 41, also broke the two-hour mark with a 1:59:33 fiish and a new personal best.
Also posting a career best with a 2:14:30 was Spring's Lacy Goedeke, 28, who is training for the Rocky Raccoon 50-Miler to be held on Saturday, February 5. She was paced the entire way by her husband - and two-time Ironman, Greg Goedeke.
